Over the weekend, fans got their latest glimpse at Kingdom Hearts 3. While Square Enix’s latest Disney collaboration has suffered a number of delays, the game will supposedly release sometime in 2018. The title is currently scheduled for PS4 and Xbox One, but director Tetsuya Nomura kept alive the possibility that the title will eventually see release on Switch.
“The Nintendo Switch is definitely a very interesting piece of hardware, but if we lightly say, ‘Oh yeah, we’ll be on the Nintendo Switch,’ I’m sure people will come back and say, ‘But what about the PS4 and Xbox One? We want them out first. Don’t focus on other platforms,’” Nomura said in an interview with IGN. “So for now, we want to focus on what platforms we’ve already announced we’re going to be releasing Kingdom Hearts 3 on. And so after, perhaps, maybe we can start thinking about other possibilities.”
At this point, Switch owners likely shouldn’t hold their breaths. While Square Enix has shown a lot of interest in the system, the process of releasing Kingdom Hearts 3 on any platform has seemed exhausting for those involved. Speaking with GameSpot, Nomura blamed the game’s many delays on Square Enix’s insistence on changing to Unreal Engine 4 for the game’s development, which resulted in already finished work having to be re-done. While this frustrated Nomura, it could benefit Switch in the long run, as many developers have cited the ease of porting titles developed using Unreal Engine 4 to Switch.
Time will tell if Square Enix finds Kingdom Hearts 3 to be a worthwhile endeavor, but with Switch still selling incredibly well, fans should make the company know that they’re interested in the possibility.
