If you weren’t aware before, Pokémon TCG remains every bit as hot a commodity as it has ever been. But while the popular trading card game saw something of a resurgence during the pandemic, it has once again seen a spike in recent times following the release of the Prismatic Evolutions booster set in January. Scalpers, as they are wont to do, swarmed retailers at launch to get their greedy hands on the sets, driving prices through the roof. As a result, most store shelves are bare of any Pokémon TCG products, and retailers like Target are once again putting up signs declaring they will be limiting how many Pokémon TCG products are purchased per customer.

Well, it seems that the latest kerfuffle over Pokémon cards hasn’t escaped the notice of retailer GameStop. In a pleasing move, the company announced the following via X:

GameStop Discontinues Pokémon TCG Pre-orders

GameStop will no longer offer pre-orders for Pokémon TCG products, and will be implementing purchase limits on select SKUs. Our goal is to ensure more fans have the opportunity to experience these exciting releases, rather than limiting access to early buyers and resellers.

Additionally, GameStop will offer free card savers and sleeves for PSA grading submissions on launch weekends at our Rip and Submit events. Find a PSA center near you at gamestop.com/psa

POWER TO THE PLAYERS

The post doesn’t mention what these limitations will be, but regardless, any action is better than the virtual inaction that we’ve seen from The Pokémon Company International when it comes to scalpers. This writer, certainly, has been beyond tired of consumers getting the short end of the stick every time a major release hits stores, whether it’s Pokémon cards, amiibos, or anything else. Hopefully this move will hit scalpers where it hurts—their wallets—and allow more real fans to be able to purchase Pokémon TCG products in the future without a heavy markup.
