So far, Switch has proven to be a surprisingly popular platform for rhythm games, especially ones that take advantage of the touch screen. However, another entry in the genre has recently received a Japanese release date and looks to do things a little differently. Gal Metal comes out in February and looks to use the Joy-Cons’ motion controls and HD Rumble to capture the sensation of drumming.
Gal Metal is being published by DMM Games and, despite its focus on heavy metal, features a rather cute, manga-inspired aesthetic including a story told through comic panels. It also appears to feature head banging, octopus-like aliens. In terms of gameplay, Gal Metal encourages players to construct their own beats along to the music instead of having to nail specific notes like most rhythm games. The following videos should help clarify some of these details, though the fact they’re in Japanese still leaves plenty of questions.
Gal Metal will retail for 4,980 yen and comes out on February 8 in Japan with preorders starting this week. Nothing has been said regarding a version of the game for external markets yet, however, the Japanese eShop is accessible to gamers worldwide so, if need be, that will always be an option for those desperate to get in touch with the school girl drummer that lives inside us all.
