It’s news to nobody that movies based on video games generally don’t do very well, often failing to strike a chord with passionate fans and even more rarely earning the respect of critics. Regardless, every few years Hollywood comes along and has another crack at it. Their next attempt at breaking that trend is Sega’s venerable mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog, and we’ve just gotten our first look at the titular hero in a recently released motion poster.
We are first greeted with Sonic’s signature blue blur before he stops so we can get a better view of his heavily shadowed form. While we can see little of the character’s details, what little is shown has already created some rather divisive discussion as some people are doubting the efficacy of rendering Sonic in a more realistic manner. Of course, given that Sonic will be a CG character inserted into an otherwise live action film, it’s questionable whether his normal, cartoony look would have worked. Regardless, whether this new take on the character is flawless or falls into the uncanny valley, the chances of all fans being satisfied is almost certainly nonexistent.
The movie is still quite a ways off, though, with a release date of November 8, 2019, so it might be a while longer before we see any more about the film. Sooner or later, though, we’re going to see this new take on Sonic in all his glory. I’m more curious to see Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik.

This might be one of the most frightening silhouettes I’ve ever seen.
