Square Enix is going to be offering up retro RPG fans an irresistible treat next week: six classic Final Fantasy games all in one collection. Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is a compilation containing the first six entries in the Final Fantasy series. Although the names aren’t particularly exciting, here’s the list:

  • Final Fantasy
  • Final Fantasy II
  • Final Fantasy III
  • Final Fantasy IV
  • Final Fantasy V
  • Final Fantasy VI

Here’s a look at the remasters in action, which will come to Nintendo Switch on April 19:

For those of you who play your games on the hardware of the Distinguished Competition, you might already be aware that there was some controversy surrounding the initial launch of these Pixel Remaster games. A huge part of the frustration came from the redesigned font and visuals for each game. Gone were the gorgeous pixel art characters and letters, replaced instead with (fans argued) lifeless versions that looked more at home in a budget mobile game. On PC many turned to mods in order to make the games appear more in line with their original NES and SNES versions. For this collection, Square Enix is extending an olive branch in the form of its own (again) reworked sprites and font.

It isn’t perfect, certainly, as the character sprite art is not an exact match for the originals, nor is the new pixel font. Why Square Enix isn’t simply offering unaltered versions of all six games for fans to play is perplexing, to say the least. Especially when one considers that there is a bustling industry around taking retro classics and doing everything a developer can to preserve the look and feel of these games so that they play as authentically as possible compared to how they did on original hardware on CRT screens. Alas, Square Enix is instead tinkering where no one has asked them to, and even in its concession to fans still isn’t presenting the titles exactly as they were.

Do these changes make you more or less inclined to purchase Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster this week? Let us know in the comments and on social media!

    penduin says...

    Square: Expensive re-releases on PC!
(I squint at tiny-and-bland lettering on a sea of empty screen space)
Square: Switch ports, and we fixed the font!
(I squint at tiny-pixel-style lettering on a sea of empty screen space)

    Sigh.
