For two console generations, the Final Fantasy series, and the JRPG genre in general, flourished on Nintendo hardware. Unfortunately, the decision to stick with cartridges for the N64 drove many developers to PlayStation. Many Nintendo fans were longing for a Final Fantasy game by the time GameCube made its way into gamers’ homes and they got their wish, albeit with a twist. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was a radical departure for the series as a multiplayer focused action RPG that required everyone to have a Game Boy Advance in addition to the cable needed to connect it to GameCube. The game sold fairly well, but it didn’t exactly scratch the Final Fantasy itch thanks to its experimental, rather obtuse nature.
Soon, the experiment will be getting another chance with an updated version that will be released on modern consoles including Switch. While we don’t have many details yet, one can imagine this will be more approachable seeing how multiple GBAs won’t be needed to experience the game as intended. Also, the trailer seems to heavily suggest that online multiplayer will be supported, which should make getting a full party together a much simpler process.
