Along with the rise of independent studios over the last decade, there has also been an increase in the number of games shirking the standard expectations of the medium. Whether it’s a struggle between winning or losing or just conflict in general, many developers have put aside the more competitive aspects of video games to focus on how the art form can be used to mold enticing experiences based solely on exploration or movement through compelling environments. Feather looks to do all this, albeit in a more airborne way.
In the title, developed by Samurai Punk, you assume the role of a bird flying across a beautiful island. While there appear to be some tight spaces to present navigational challenges, the emphasis is more on experiencing the serene world around you, discovering new sounds and music as the island audibly reacts to your presence. There’s even online cross-platform multiplayer, though the focus seems to be on flying together as there’s no form of competition.
Feather is available now on Nintendo Switch eShop for $9.99.
