2020 is shaping up to be a huge year for consoles, with both the PS5 and Xbox Series X slated to launch during the holiday season. While this could mean big competition — and possibly big worries — for Nintendo, one Switch developer believes Nintendo has nothing to worry about.
Engine Software’s VP of Development Ruud van de Moosdijk recently spoke with Nintendo Everything about the Switch, saying it “exists in its own dimension of the market and will continue to do well,” and that its “uniqueness” makes up for its lack of power compared to its upcoming rivals.
“In my opinion the Nintendo Switch, like the Wii before, exists in its own dimension of the market and will continue to do well even when the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are released. As so many times before Nintendo’s consoles have just their own uniqueness that doesn’t depend on having the fastest processor or the largest memory. That’s why I always have to smile when I hear someone say Nintendo is done.”
Nintendo’s support for developers was another strength that van de Moosdijk cited in the company’s favor, saying that they’ve done a “fantastic job” of providing tools and a supportive developer environment. Engine Software has ported several games to the Switch itself, including Ni No Kuni and Into the Breach.
Do you think Nintendo and the Switch have their own place in the market or do you think that they should be concerned about the PS5 and Xbox Series X? Let us know in the comments.
