Clyde “Tomato” Mandelin, who we recently had the pleasure of chatting with about his book Legends of Localization Book 1: The Legend of Zelda, has worked his magic to discover an Easter egg in the much-beloved SNES game EarthBound! During the scene toward the beginning of the game when BuzzBuzz appears for the first time, there’s actually a way of controlling the beam of light that surrounds him!
Using a second controller, players can mash on buttons to make the shaft of light move up and down. As far as anyone can tell, this doesn’t have any impact on the outcome of the game… but it’s a nifty little quirk to play with, nonetheless! Along with the discovery of a new tell in Punch-Out!! and sliding animation in Super Mario Bros. 3, it’s been a busy time for finding new things in old games.
