While Detective Pikachu as a game was already quite a departure for the Pokémon series (and one that worked out very well!), it’s not an exaggeration to say that the movie bearing the same name is even more of one. Set to debut on May 10, 2019, the film starring Ryan “Deadpool” Reynolds as the titular mouse detective is still a big question mark for most fans. Bits and pieces of the plot synopsis have allegedly been leaked, along with the occasional snapshot of the set, but beyond that it’s unknown what everyone will be able to expect from Pokémon: Detective Pikachu when it finally debuts.
Well, the curtain is ever so slowly being peeled to the side, as the film has recently been screened to a handful of lucky viewers. Despite being in an unfinished, post-production state, the movie was shown to fans who met it with great praise and enthusiasm. The general consensus seems to be that stars Reynolds and Justice Smith (who plays Tim Goodman from the game) have a great repartee between one another and that the CGI is very well done. There’s a lot of talk about easter eggs and photorealistic Pokémon being thrown around at the moment, but if nothing else it looks as though the curse of video game film adaptations being garbage might finally be coming to an end with Detective Pikachu!
