The history behind Earthbound’s sequel is a long one and complex one. In fact, for those outside Japan, it’s still being written, with a great deal of impatience from fans. However, the thing that really kicked things off was the revelation back in 1996 that Mother 3 (or Earthbound 64 depending on your market) was being made for the recently released Nintendo 64. Of course, that game never came to pass and the RPG eventually got its sequel on the GBA, though only in Japan.
For a long time, we could only see the unreleased game in the form of stills, but an old clip from Japan’s Asahi TV has reemerged showing the game in motion. The clip comes from a segment covering Nintendo’s Space World `96 exhibition. It shows a variety of environments ranging from jungles to deserts as well as familiar looking characters from Earthbound, though the cast of the actual sequel released years later was very different.
While it’s interesting to see the 3D world in motion, including what looks like hover cars, the video does little to show what gameplay might have looked like outside of world traversal. But, that proved to be a moot point as all the work was scrapped and the project eventually found life on the GBA. Meanwhile, everyone outside of Japan is still waiting for Mother 3 in any form.
