EA Making Improvements to the FIFA 19 Custom Engine

The goal is for a better-looking FIFA on Switch!

FIFA 18 on Switch was a serviceable soccer sim on the console, but it also was a notch below the graphical fidelity of the game on other platforms. Switch is notably not quite as powerful as PlayStation 4 or Xbox One (to say nothing of those consoles’ Pro and X variants), but in general the system is able to produce some graphically stupendous experiences. As such, EA is aware that its efforts with FIFA 18 weren’t up to snuff and will be endeavoring to make FIFA 19 better.

FIFA 18 ran on a custom graphics engine made specifically for Switch. This engine will be returning, but according to producer Andrei Lazarescu, the plan all along was to continue to work with and beef it up over time. “The intent was never to have a one-off custom engine that we’re never going to touch again, it was to have that as a baseline and then build from there,” Lazarescu told DreamTeamFC in an interview. Apparently, some of the improvements to the engine that Lazarescu was speaking about were used in the recent World Cup update that came to FIFA 18.

Sadly, that update has been plagued with issues, but at least EA is making efforts to improve upon FIFA on Switch and not abandoning the series or simply shuffling out the same flawed product for a second year. Considering the incredible momentum Switch has maintained since its launch, EA would be wise to continue improving upon the series for Nintendo users.
