Since its release in March, Switch has proven to be surprise hit. The new console remains hard to find around the world and even though Nintendo has announced plans to increase production, their aggressive software schedule will likely keep demand higher than supply. With a few exceptions, many major third party publishers appeared to be somewhat hesitant about the new system, but its success is forcing them to reconsider those plans.
EA currently just has one title planned for the hybrid console, FIFA 18. While they are excited at the prospect of bringing the biggest sports franchise in the world to Switch, the company is currently looking at other ways to leverage the system’s unique features with some of their other properties.
“We’re going to continue to watch how the hardware does,” stated Laura Miele, Executive VP of Global Publishing. ” We are exploring other products. We are looking at other IP and what the technology connections need to be for that.”
“When you have a game you’re playing on the go, it’s a different interface, different experience, different features, and different flow I think, then it would be if you’re playing on the sticks in your living room on a TV.” Miele went on to explain. “We never want to do just a direct port of something; we want to have a meaningful experience on the hardware.“
This approach is somewhat heartening; it’s good to know that EA is actually interested in doing more than just dishing out straightforward ports. However, considering the fact Switch is just as capable of delivering a quality home console experience as it is a handheld one, EA and other publishers should try not to underestimate its functionality.
