Among the many new titles revealed during Nintendo’s E3 video presentation, a new platformer was shown off featuring Mario’s faithful dinosaur steed. The tentatively titled Yoshi follows in the tradition of the character’s other solo outings in that it is a platformer featuring arts and crafts inspired visuals. However, from the looks of things, Yoshi is far from a rehash of those previous games.
Instead of taking place in a Woolly World, Yoshi appears to have broader inspirations and includes elements like construction paper, cardboard, scotch tape, and other classic craft supplies. Yoshi also appears to be made of felt. The gameplay will take advantage of the unique aesthetics by letting players reverse their view of the game so they can explore both the foreground and background of the diorama-like levels. Also, Yoshi can interact with the world in clever ways that take advantage of the design.
Yoshi currently is currently scheduled for a 2018 release, and while we might have to wait a while for a more specific release date, it seems likely we will see more of the game in action sometime during Nintendo’s Treehouse Live stream.
