Metroid 5 is Metroid Dread and it looks stunning. The fifth sequential entry in the series (recall that the Metroid Prime series is an offshoot that takes place after Metroid and prior to the events of Metroid II), this will be the first completely original 2D Metroid game in 19 years. Following on from the events of Metroid Fusion on Game Boy Advance, take your first look at the upcoming sequel:

If you’re a series fan like this writer is, that was one heck of a first impression. Eagle-eyed fans might recognize the look of Dread as being quite familiar to the 3DS game Metroid: Samus Returns. That observation is an astute one because developer Mercury Steam is back to handle production of Dread alongside Nintendo and Metroid creator Yoshio Sakamoto. Story details are sparse at the moment, but what is known is that Dread is being billed as the final installment in the storyline between Samus and the Metroids.

Metroid Dread launches on October 8. Alongside the standard game fans will also be able to purchase the above Special Edition. The Special Edition of Dread comes with “the game, a steel game case, artbook, and art cards covering all 5 games in the 2D saga.” What’s more, two special amino figures, one of Samus and the other of the robotic E.M.M.I enemy that terrorizes the player throughout the game, will also launch on the same day.

As one might expect, the announcement of a new Metroid game as opposed to (finally) showing off some footage of Metroid Prime 4 was quite a shocker. That said, Metroid Dread was actually first announced in a Game Informer article back in 2005 and even hinted at in Metroid Prime 3 as an obscure Space Pirate data file that players could scan in the game. Interestingly, the mention in Metroid Prime 3 also seemed to hint that the project had been canceled. Dread has been in development limbo for many years, so it’s great to see it finally coming to life on Switch. As we learn more, we’ll continue to update, but in the interim tell us your thoughts in the comments and on social media!
