In 1989, Enix released Dragon Warrior in the United States. While tremendous effort was made to turn the Dragon Quest series into a hit in the west, it’s taken 30 years to truly nurture the brand into an international phenomenon. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Illusive Age seems to be the installment that’s really pushed the franchise to the next level.
We’re delighted to announce that #DragonQuest XI has shipped over 5.5 million copies worldwide, and series creator Yuji Horii has penned a special message to mark the milestone.
It’s on sale right now on both #PS4 and #Steam, so it’s the perfect time to jump in and play! pic.twitter.com/TfsVgzDgP7

It was recently revealed that lifetime sales of Dragon Quest XI have exceeded 5.5 million copies. This global total includes units sold on Nintendo 3DS, Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. Series creator Yuji Hori had some warm words for fans— here’s an excerpt:
“I strongly believe that this figure has only been achieved thanks to our fans who have always loved the Dragon Quest series and also the new players who discovered Dragon Quest or JRPGs through this title. If I could ever go back in time to meet myself when I was still making the very first Dragon Quest, I would love to tell him, ‘In 30 years’ time, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has been released and loved by international fans beyond seas and languages.’ I will carry on doing my very best to deliver further Dragon Quest titles to our fans worldwide. Thank you very much to all the fans who have enjoyed the title!”
The Switch version of the game, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age— Definitive Edition launched a few months ago this past September. Those interested in experiencing the (appropriately) definitive version of Dragon Quest XI would do well to track down a copy for themselves!
