As part of a recent Dragon Quest XI Nintendo Direct, Square Enix announced a new feature that would be coming to the 3DS version of the game.
Dragon Quest XI lets players collect characters known as Yocchi in order to take on a dungeon called the “Time-Crossing Dungeon” which, when completed, will allow players to visit worlds from past Dragon Quest games. Each Yocchi comes with their own unique appearance and abilities, and you will be able to form a party of up to eight Yocchi in order to defeat the dungeon.
The Yocchi, which can be either collected in-game or traded via StreetPass, are key to solving the various puzzles in these past worlds, and Square Enix has said that fans can expect to see what went on behind the scenes in classic moments from past Dragon Quest games.

While Square Enix has previously stated that a Switch version of Dragon Quest XI is planned, the company did not provide any further details of that version in the Nintendo Direct.
Dragon Quest XI is coming to Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 on July 29 in Japan. A release date for the West has not been announced yet.
