Dragon Quest VII and VIII Heading West in 2016

Yes, we couldn’t believe it, either!

Yes, believe it or not, but during today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast it was revealed that Dragon Quest VII and VIII are finally heading west to 3DS. Both are remakes, with VII already having been out for a couple of years, and VIII just launching this past August, but neither had been confirmed for localization outside of Japan. After eons of rampant speculation and outright wishing, fans can rest easy knowing that Square Enix has finally acquiesced. If I was in charge of Square’s press department, I would have put out a release along the lines of, “haters gonna hate/kept you waiting, huh?” but I digress.

Dragon Quest VII was a PlayStation exclusive, while Dragon Quest VIII saw release on PlayStation 2. It was thrilling to hear that both were being remade for Nintendo’s handheld, but it was looking bleak for a while now regarding a European or North American launch, despite the original versions of the titles already seeing release in both regions. Dragon Quest has never reached the levels of popularity in the west that the series enjoys in Japan, but there are still plenty of enthusiastic and devout fans who can’t wait to take these grand adventures on the road.

Are you looking forward to playing these two games? What do you think of Dragon Quest? Let us know in the comments!

This news was quite a nice surprise during an already fantastic direct.

    I sank many hours playing 1, 2, & 3 on Gameboy Color, and 4, 5, 6, & 9 on the DS.

While I’ve already played through them on Sony consoles, it will be great to “fill in the gaps” on the 3DS with Dragon Quests 7 and 8.

Glad to see Square Enix not giving up on releasing these games in the West.

Square Enix poured the love on this direct. They should bring the FfVii remake to Wii U just for the hell of it.

Why not, right? They already “let slip” that they are (possibly) bringing Dragon Quest XI to the NX. Why not bring all of their heavy hitters over to the big N? The more Square-Enix, the better.

Bringing the FFVII remake to Nintendo would not only be great all by itself, but I imagine we’d get lots of FF Virtual Console love in the run-up/hype for the release. While I have the SNES Final Fantasy games on my Wii virtual console, I do love me some save states/off TV play and have been disappointed this generation.

    Now, about Crono Trigger….
