Sega has been gearing up for Sonic Forces with a slow trickle of information, but today, they dropped their biggest bombshell yet. When the platformer comes out later this year, players will get to customize and play as their very own anthropomorphized character.
We’ve known for a while that players would get the chance to play as both the classic and modern versions of Sonic through 2D and 3D levels respectively, but this now adds a third way to play to the mix. Players will start off the customization process by selecting one of several animal species (wolf, rabbit, cat, dog, bear, bird, or hedgehog) with each having a special ability ranging from the bird’s double jump to the rabbit’s extended invincibility after being hit. Furthermore, players will have the option to outfit their creations with aesthetic clothing as well as practical gear, such as a grappling hook or flamethrower. Based on the trailer below, it also looks like the custom characters will be playable in both the 2D and 3D levels.
While Sonic Forces doesn’t have a solid release date yet, Sega is planning to launch it near the end of the year. In the meantime, it’s probably safe to assume we will see more about the game at E3 next month.
