Confirmed: A Donkey Kong-Themed Expansion is Coming to Super Nintendo World

Back in August, we reported on the rumors that a Donkey Kong-themed area was coming to Super Nintendo World in Japan, which was fueled by eagle-eyed sleuths that noticed what appeared to be construction happening at the theme park as well as environmental details that seemed to reflect the Donkey Kong art style.

The rumors are rumors no longer, as Nintendo of Japan has officially announced that the Donkey Kong expansion to Super Nintendo World is happening and will open in 2024. According to the press release posted to Nintendo of Japan’s corporate site, the expansion will include “a roller coaster, interactive experiences and themed merchandise and food.” It’s also expected to be very sizable, as it will increase the size of Super Nintendo World by approximately 70%.

Shigeru Miyamoto will be involved with the design of the Donkey Kong expansion just as he was with the original Mario-themed portion of the park. Nintendo of Japan also claims that the Donkey Kong expansion will be a “gamechanger that combines the innovative technology and globally popular approach to theme park entertainment of Universal with the creativity of Nintendo.”
