Celeste made an enormous impact when it launched last year. The platformer is brutally difficult, with challenges that would make the likes of Super Meat Boy blush. What makes Celeste even more special, however, is its heartfelt narrative that touches on issues like mental health in a way that’s both sincere and relatable. While developer Matt Makes Games (which has been rebranded as Extremely OK Games) has been promising a ninth chapter for Celeste in the months since launch, the DLC is finally ready to go live September 9!
Also, #Celeste Chapter 9 is releasing on 9/9/19! Get ready, it’s a tough one. More details in that same post: https://t.co/6srBRRrwXY pic.twitter.com/OGP4norzhp

Chapter 9: Farewell is free to all players of Celeste. The DLC also promises to bring an additional 100 levels, which bumps the total to over 800! What’s more, composer Lena Raine will be back to provide the music to this finale. Anyone who’s interested can head over to Raine’s Bandcamp page to pick up the $9, 13-track album (titled Celeste: Farewell).
Designer Matt Thorson of Extremely OK Games spoke with IGN recently and revealed that a sequel to Celeste is not currently forthcoming. “And as for Celeste 2,” Thorson said, “we really don’t want to make a sequel to this game. Maybe in the future we’ll change our minds, but right now we don’t know how we’d do a sequel justice. And besides, we’re way more interested in making something new for our next full release.”
Fans who have been awaiting the physical release of Celeste from Limited Run Games should be especially excited for this update. As noted in a previous update from the site, production of the physical copies was halted in order to get Chapter 9 on the cartridge at the same time. According to LRG, putting Chapter 9 on the cart is part of its “mission of preservation,” a mission that Nintendojo also takes very seriously! Bravo to all, and especially to Extremely OK Games for the amazing achievement that is the success of Celeste, which has sold nearly a million copies thus far.
