CD Projekt spent more than a decade translating existing games into their native Polish before jumping onto the world stage with their first in-house developed game — The Witcher. Despite being based on a book series barely known outside of Poland and only available on PC, the game did well enough to warrant a sequel, which in turn opened the way for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a massive hit that immensely boosted not only the company, but the Witcher brand as a whole.

The Witcher 3 originally came out in 2015, but its success has had legs as one of the most acclaimed games of the generation. More recently, the game received an impressive Switch port and sales for other platforms skyrocketed after the series was turned into a popular Netflix series. All of this has translated into big sales and lots of money. The latest estimates value the developer at about $8 billion, making it second only to Ubisoft among European gaming companies; Ubisoft currently sits at about $9.6 billion.

Of course, it’s worth noting that this year will likely continue being very good for CD Projekt. In September, the company is releasing their first project outside the Witcher universe, Cyberpunk 2077, which is based on a pen and paper roleplaying game. Unfortunately, there are currently no plans for Cyberpunk to come to Switch, but the studio’s reputation for creating immersive RPGs will almost certainly translate to lots more money in their pockets.
