Metroid fans may not have had a new 2D title in the franchise in quite some time, but several indie developers have stepped up to provide a number of titles influenced by the classic Nintendo franchise. When Axiom Verge released last year for PlayStation 4, it seemed like the kind of title that would be a perfect fit for the Wii U. The game’s creator, Thomas Happ, apparently seemed to think so; the developer has confirmed that the title is headed to the eShop later this year!
Axiom Verge promises an experience modeled not only after classic games like Metroid and Castlevania, but Contra and Blaster Master, as well. For gamers craving content, the title seems to have quite a bit to offer, including more than 40 different weapons and tools, 100 upgrades, 80 enemy types and 1,000 rooms to explore. The game also grants players the ability to manipulate “glitches,” which effect enemies and allow the player access to previously hidden areas. We’ve embedded the game’s PS4 launch trailer below!
Axiom Verge‘s PS4 release received strong critical acclaim; the game was even nominated for Best Independent Game at The Game Awards 2015. Hopefully the game will receive similar accolades when the title releases on Wii U. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for more information on the title in the near future!

Now this is GREAT news! I saw this trailer a while back and was bummed I couldn’t get it, since the only system I don’t have is PS4 yet. Nothing I want to play on it that would make me buy it, but I plan to get one perhaps later this year or next if any games come out that look halfway interesting. Now I’m glad I get to have this game on the Wii U instead! I have PLENTY of space on my 1TB external drive still to be filled.
