Well, this is awkward. The Internet was ablaze with excitement when it was reported by various outlets that upcoming Switch “synergetic action” game Astral Chain would be the start of a trilogy. Freshman director Takahisa Taura (the designer of NieR:Automata) had been quoted as saying as such to IGN in an interview that this would be the case. It turns out, however, that Taura didn’t think his intent was properly translated and took to Twitter to clear up the error:
記事で『「3部作の1作目として」作っている』と記載されていますが、そんな事実はありません。僕の頭の中では3部作どころかそれ以上に展開できるくらい色々考えている、と答えただけです。 > 『ASTRAL CHAIN』は3部作の1作目? 追加コンテンツの予定はない模様 – IGN Japan https://t.co/45kjUwjzID

You can hit translate on the Tweet above (unless you’re one of those cool people who can read Japanese, of course), but in brief, Taura says that what he was trying to convey was that he can envision Astral Chain as the first in a trilogy or possibly even more than that, but at present there are no current plans for additional content beyond this inaugural game.
So… bummer? Not a bummer? More than a trilogy technically enters into Star Wars-like territory of countless sequels and spin-offs, so that’s exciting, but it could also mean that fans only get a single entry in this budding franchise. Ultimately, it’s likely that sales will dictate how far Astral Chain goes, so if it plays well and is received well, anything can happen!
