It’s been a long time coming. Fans of the Pokémon anime have long held out hope of seeing Ash Ketchum win a Pokémon League tournament. While Ash has had some close calls and won a pair of tournaments from outside the games, the character has only ever come close when it counted. That has finally changed, as Ash Ketchum is now the official Pokémon League Champion of the Alola region!
The win came courtesy of Ash’s Dusk Form Lycanroc, defeating Gladion’s Midnight Form Lycanroc in dramatic fashion. Ash caught Lycanroc as a Rockruff towards the beginning of the Sun and Moon anime and it has been one of Ash’s most reliable Pokémon, since.
The news of Ash’s victory broke this morning, shortly after the episode aired in Japan. Since then, a number of fans have taken to social media to congratulate the character on his well-earned victory, including Ash’s original voice actress, Veronica Taylor. Taylor recorded a special video for the occasion, in her trademark voice for the character.
Congratulations to Ash Ketchum on winning the Pokémon League from Ash’s ‘younger’ self, circa 1998…yup, hard work, determination, good friends, and a bit of luck pay off! #pokemon #ashketchum #winning pic.twitter.com/JhgRcGJBEy

With just a few short months before the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield and, presumably, the upcoming anime based on the Galar region, rumors are swirling about what fans can expect from the next series. At this time, no official information has been released by The Pokémon Company. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how Ash’s newfound status might play into the next season.
