Over the years, the Pokémon anime has taken quite a bit of inspiration from the video games, but the reverse is rarely true. One major exception is Ash-Greninja. In the cartoon, Ash formed a bond with his Greninja that allowed the two to work completely in sync with one another, taking on a more powerful form, as a result. During this process, Greninja’s appearance would change to share some resemblance with its trainer. When the Pokémon Sun and Moon demo came out two years ago, players were rewarded for playing through it with an in-game version of Ash-Greninja. Now this specific version of the Pokémon is once again returning, this time in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!
In this morning’s Smash Bros. Blog update, Nintendo confirmed that Ash-Greninja will now appear as part of Greninja’s Final Smash move! The character’s previous Final Smash played up the Pokémon’s ninja inspiration with a fast-paced attack in front of a full moon. While today’s blog update did include a short video showcasing Greninja, the Final Smash was not shown. As such, it’s not known at this time whether the change will merely be an aesthetic one.
Fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out the answer! Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arrives on Switch December 7.
