The latest update to Minecraft should have fans curious about the changes to its gameplay and mechanics, but instead everyone is wondering what happened to Notch. Markus “Notch” Persson, that is, the creator of Minecraft whose name has been unceremoniously deleted from the splash screens littered throughout the game. In the past, Notch’s name was displayed prominently and frequently, as you can see in the below example:
Now, all mention of Notch has been removed (outside of the game’s credits) with little indication as to why. That said, there has been a bit of controversy surrounding the game designer in the time since he sold the property to Microsoft. Multiple Tweets by Notch have been construed as conspiratorial, homophobic, and more. This does at least open the door to the possibility that, perhaps, Microsoft wanted to distance itself from a potentially problematic figure by jettisoning his name.
