Apologies for letting this one slip past us, but a couple of days ago Nintendo put a big, fat grin on the faces of Blue Bomber fans when it released Capcom’s five Game Boy-era Mega Man Games onto Switch Online. The titles included are:
- Mega Man: Dr. Wiley’s Revenge
- Mega Man II
- Mega Man III
- Mega Man IV
- Mega Man V
You can take a look at all of them in this trailer:
As ever, these titles are available to those with active Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions. If you’re looking to give them a play, they’re available right now—simply update the Game Boy app on your Nintendo Switch and you’ll be good to go.
These are great games any way they’re played. 5 (V) is my particular favorite, but I have to say Super Game Boy is the best way to enjoy it. I’m a big sucker for developer-chosen color palettes and the other little flourishes that come with SGB compatibility.
Somewhat in line with the Mario Land and Castlevania series, these embrace the “weird and wonderful” style of taking well-loved NES mechanics and mixing things up a bit, both in service of the smaller screen and simply to try new ideas. Even when they’re at their most similar to the NES originals, the tighter spaces and tweaked mechanics here give a unique feel, one which has led me to appreciate the also-zoomed-in Megaman 7 and 8 more than I originally did.
Mega Man V goes all-out on trying something completely new. If you only try one, try that one.
