Super Bowl LI won’t soon be forgotten. After all, the game featured an historic moment: a commercial for Nintendo’s newest system. In case you happened to miss the most significant thing to happen during the game’s fourth quarter, we’ve mirrored the trailer below!
While last year’s Super Bowl featured a terrific commercial for the Pokémon franchise, this year’s ad was much more notable, as Nintendo made a major push for their newest system (as well as Breath of the Wild) on a very public stage. Given that the fourth quarter featured some other developments that may have excited viewers, it’s likely Nintendo lucked into the best possible time during the game to get people to take notice.
While Nintendo could not have anticipated Super Bowl LI would take such an interesting turn, the move itself would have likely paid off either way. The most frequent complaint about Wii U is that there wasn’t enough general awareness of the console. Some casual gamers even believed the console was a peripheral, rather than a brand-new system. After yesterday’s commercial, it would seem Nintendo has learned from that particular mistake, marketing the system in a way that hasn’t been seen since the days of Wii and DS. It certainly represents a better start than last generation.
While not all Switch news has been good news, Nintendo seems to be taking some important measures to rectify their past mistakes. Time will tell if these new moves will pay off for the company, but preorder sales certainly seem to indicate a brighter future.
