Track of the Week: Frosty Wheel (Kirby’s Epic Yarn)

Nothing says Christmas like Kirby!

A couple weeks ago, I had the privilege of covering Phendrana Drifts for Track of the Week. This week, I’m covering another wintery track (and another personal favorite): Frosty Wheel from Kirby’s Epic Yarn. While Phendrana Drifts perfectly matches the tone of a snow-covered area, Frosty Wheel goes beyond that, channeling a very specific part of winter. I’m talking, of course, about Christmas.

What really makes this song stand out in the game is the wonderful use of piano. It really seems reminiscent of something one might hear in “A Charlie Brown Christmas” or some other seasonal classic. It’s the kind of thing you can imagine hearing late on Christmas Eve as you stare out the windows of your house at a neighborhood freshly covered in snow.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is probably one of the most unique titles to ever grace a Nintendo console. Unlike most video games, the main character can’t really “die” in the game. This makes the game a much more peaceful experience than other platforming titles, as the emphasis instead is placed on exploration. I think that this track conveys that fact more so than any other song in the game. While the feeling of peace in Phendrana Drifts eventually melts away to a sense of danger, that tone never seeps into Frosty Wheel’s cheerful melody.

As we here at Nintendojo go on our holiday break, we want to wish you all a holiday filled with fun, safety and peace. And maybe some Nintendo presents, as well! When we come back, we just might have a few more winter-themed tracks to cover, but leave us any of your suggestions in the comments below! Perhaps we’ll feature them as a Track of the Week!
