If there’s a franchise in desperate need of an ownership change, it’s Tomb Raider. Under the stewardship of Embracer Group and Crystal Dynamics, Lara Croft has been sanitized to the point of being nearly unrecognizable. Rampant censorship of the character has been an ongoing problem, as the brand has become more concerned with apologizing to Internet pundits over imagined sleights versus producing a product that appeals to its core audience. Virtually every aspect of the character, including her bust size, sex appeal, and tomb raiding, has been deemed problematic, to the point that one can’t help but wonder why they continue to push the property if it’s so terrible and naughty in their eyes?

With that in mind, fans have been given their first look at Sophie Turner in the titular role of Lara Croft for Amazon’s upcoming Tomb Raider TV series and, well, at least the costume looks right? Honestly, it’s a bit odd to think that getting the very basics of Lara’s outfit down is some giant win when in reality, that should be the bare minimum for any adaptation. And while Turner has clearly worked out for the part, let’s be real—she doesn’t look like Lara at all. For the sake of contrast, here’s Angeline Jolie as Lara, looking almost like she was torn from the original video games:

It doesn’t bode well for Amazon’s series, which has already been heavily criticized by the fan base for its selection of Phoebe Waller-Bridge as creator, writer, and producer. Waller-Bridge, whose claims to fame are the show Fleabag (a slice of life story about a bitter Londoner) and a forgettable turn in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, was a perplexing choice, to say the least, as there’s nothing on paper that suggests any logical reason why she’s a good fit for the property. Unless, of course, the goal is more radical change, in which case she might be the perfect fit. But none of that says Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and these teaser photos certainly don’t, either.
