While the upcoming Sonic Mania might be the title old-school Sonic fans are most excited for, Sonic Forces for Switch won’t be using its fancy hi-res graphics just for 3D levels. Like Sonic Generations, the game will also use that extra processing power to render gorgeous side scrolling levels with the classic 2D gameplay of yesteryear.
Sega has released a new trailer for Sonic Forces showing that not only will the developer be revisiting those old mechanics, but it’s looking to the series’ first, and arguably most iconic, levels for inspiration. Sonic Forces will feature a new, HD take on Green Hill Zone; and while it isn’t a pixel for polygon remake of the original, the overall aesthetic and core mechanics should look instantly recognizable.
Of course, the Sonic franchise has lost some of its luster over the last decade or so, but Sega has acknowledged the games haven’t always lived up to fans’ expectations. Hopefully we’ll see the famous hedgehog return to its former glory this year when Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania release later this year.
