The Wii U console has received a huge boost in sales in the UK following the launch of Mario Kart 8. The UK charts from last week reveal a staggering 666% increase in Wii U hardware sales. While that particular number might be menacing, it’s a great sign for the Wii U console, whose sales numbers have been notoriously low. 82% of these sales from last week were from the Mario Kart bundled version of the console.

Overall, Mario Kart 8 was the second best-selling game in the UK last week, being beaten out by Watch_Dogs on other consoles. Still, this is a good sign for Wii U and Nintendo in general. President Iwata has expressed his hopes that Mario Kart 8 will be the title that gets more people to buy Wii U, and from these numbers, he might have been right. Perhaps sales have similarly increased in other regions?
