There have been rumors about an eight player mode in Super Smash Bros. since hackers found audio clips of the announcer saying “eight player match” on the 3DS version. While this mode is still not available on 3DS, today’s Nintendo Direct confirmed that up to eight players will be able to play Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
Just to be clear, you don’t need to have exactly eight players to enjoy this mode. The Nintendo Direct also showed off five player and six player matches, assuring that no one will be forced to wait in bigger groups. To accommodate the higher number of fighters, some stages will be enlarged to give everyone room to fight. However, the only downside is that you won’t be able to play this mode online.

… I’m going to need to find everyone who left town for better things and tell them that this is what they’ve been looking for.
I don’t think I even have eight friends to play with….
