It seems that Nintendo and animation studio Illumination’s estimate of a holiday 2022 release date for the Super Mario Bros. movie will not be realized. Shigeru Miyamoto, who’s acting as a consultant on the film, made the announcement via Nintendo’s Twitter account that Super Mario Bros. is being pushed back to a spring 2023 launch. December 21, 2022 has officially given way to April 7, 2023.
This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

It’s unfortunate, but then, it’s not irregular for a Nintendo project to have its release date pushed back a bit, now is it? Miyamoto assures fans that “it will be well worth the wait.” With a promising cast comprised of a number of popular actors and actresses, not to mention Nintendo’s own intimate involvement in the development of the movie, fans can only hope that the wait is indeed worth their time.
