Set for release this year, Trap Team may be the last major release for the aging Wii

Activision has announced it’s bringing the latest installment in the popular Skylanders series, Skylanders: Trap Team, to a whole bevy of Nintendo platforms this year. Wii U, 3DS, and surprisingly, Wii, will all be getting Toys for Bob’s popular collectible toy-based action title. Not only will Nintendo’s eight-year-old Wii console get Trap Team, but Wii development will be handled by the core Toys for Bob development studio, rather than outsourced to Beenox like the Wii version of last year’s Skylanders Swap Force.

The huge install base of the popular Wii was one of the reasons the Skylanders series was able to take off in the first place, so this is perhaps a show of gratitude for Wii’s role in Skylanders’ success. Executive producer Jeff Poffenbarger had nothing but positive things to say about the aging console:

“Actually, we’re doing the Wii version. I believe it’s still a very viable platform and is very important for us. We’re just showing it on the PS4 because it looks good on a big screen. On all the platforms the quality of experience is about the same. A PS4 or Xbox One is going to run a little bit faster than the Wii but we want the experience to be the same across all platforms.”

Meanwhile, in a refreshing move, the Wii U iteration of Trap Team is being grouped with the current-gen PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, rather than categorized as last-gen with PS3 and Xbox 360 like many multiplatform Wii U games tend to do.

Skylanders: Trap Team will feature a new “trap” game mechanic where you can capture villains and then play as them. Of course, there are also 50 new Skylanders to collect, in addition to the 175 existing Skylanders, who are all playable in Trap Team.

No release date has been announced yet, but in the meantime you can check out FamilyGamerTV’s in-depth preview of Skylanders: Trap Team. Which version of Trap Team will you pick up?
