Does this mean GameCube software will be coming to the console, as well?

The special Nintendo Direct broadcast focused on Nintendo Switch 2 will be airing April 2, 2025. That anticipated Wednesday is rapidly approaching, and as such it means more rumors are beginning to percolate about the upcoming console. One that has popped up on our radar pertains to an FCC filing that suggests the return of a very beloved game controller: the one for Nintendo GameCube, to be exact.

Considered by many to be the best or at least among the best controllers Nintendo has ever produced, the GameCube pad has been a mainstay for players for years. Copycat versions of the GameCube controller are a mainstay on the current Switch, but if the rumors are to be believed, Nintendo is looking to introduce something a bit more authentic for Switch 2. The FCC filing reveals a wireless Bluetooth controller is on the way, but it’s a very specific one if fans are correct.

Over on Famiboards, sleuths have determined that the placement of a label on the controller in the filing, despite an image of said controller not being present, seems to distinctly correlate with the shape of a GameCube controller. See for yourself:

Of course, this could all just be coincidence, but the idea of Nintendo finally bringing GameCube games to Switch Online is something many fans have been waiting years for. With Switch 2 being both more powerful than the original Switch and boasting backwards compatibility, creating wireless GameCube controllers for the device opens up all sorts of interesting possibilities.

What do you think? Is all this speculating for nothing, or is there something here? Share with us in the comments and on social media!

    Yes please!

There are and have been many well-designed controllers over the years, but I’ve never found any to be more satisfying than the Cube’s.

I really enjoy the controller’s embrace of asymmetry. While having perfectly-balanced features is pleasing in its own way (and for the Switch’s detachable controller-halves, a practical necessity) letting go of that and doing something a bit more exotic with each side ironically makes for something which, to me anyway, feels more natural and human-centric.
