Laat year, Niantic and its juggernaut game Pokémon GO were acquired by Scopely for $3.5 billion. Now, president of games Ed Wu and head of M&A operations Heather Tacskovics are talking about what has happened since then and what’s on the docket for Niantic. It’s a long, interesting interview with a lot of insight into the nature of the deal between Niantic and Scopely, as well as the future of Niantic and its various games. Of supreme interest to Pokémon fans, of course, is Pokémon GO, and what might be coming to the nearly 10-year old game as time goes by.

According to Wu, one thing fans can stop thinking about is a direct sequel to Pokémon GO. “Creating a sequel that divides the community doesn’t make as much sense,” Wu said. “If and when we do something new, it will really have to be from a different angle, but still with this notion of inspiring people to explore the world together.” We would go on to say that Niantic is “thinking about the next sort of experiences we can create,” adding “But always with this focus on inspiring people to explore the world together.” It sounds like fans won’t be seeing a new version of the game anytime soon.
Do you think that Pokémon GO needs a sequel or is continuing on with the game and updating it over time is the better solution? Why not share with us on social media and in the comments.
