Shovel Knight has practically become a household name, what with multiple ports to a variety of consoles, including 3DS, Wii U, and Switch, not to mention a plethora of its own amiibo figures. Naturally, fans have been wondering ever since what developer Yacht Club Games would be tackling for its next full-fledged project. After years of waiting, the curtain has been pulled back and Mina the Hollower revealed as the team’s followup:
As the trailer shows, Mina has some major old school aesthetics going on. Indeed, the palette and screen resolution hew closely to the era of Game Boy Color, albeit slightly tweaked for today. Here’s how Yacht Club describes the game:
Descend into a frightful world of action-adventure in Mina the Hollower. Take control of Mina, a renowned Hollower hurtled into a desperate mission to rescue a cursed island. Burrow beneath hazards and monsters, whip foes into oblivion, and gear up with an arsenal of sidearms and trinkets. Explore a vast world filled with pixel-perfect graphics, masterful gameplay, beastly bosses, and infectious music. Encounter a cast of bizarre characters, search out secrets in an array of exotic locales, and illuminate the omnipresent darkness in Mina the Hollower…
Mina the Hollower is a bone-chilling action adventure featuring classic gameplay and an 8-bit aesthetic in the style of Game Boy Color, refined for the modern era. Smooth 60fps action combat, a world full of mystery and horror, and top-down adventuring combine in a mix that may remind you of classic titles like Castlevania, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, or even Bloodborne. Whip foes, burrow through the ground, and explore a pixel-perfect world in Mina the Hollower, a brand new game from the developers who brought you Shovel Knight!
