NPD has released the US sales numbers for May, and the report has further cemented Mario Kart 8’s success. Nintendo already revealed the cart racer managed to move 1.2 million units in its first weekend, but now we know that those numbers were enough to give the game a second place finish behind Watch Dogs for the title of May’s top seller. While Kirby: Triple Deluxe wasn’t as big a money making machine, the title still managed to do quite well for itself by coming in ninth.
As for console sales, we don’t have any official numbers yet, but it is looking like PlayStation 4 managed to take the crown followed by 3DS. That being said, the report did verify Wii U saw growth compared to last year, though we’ll have to wait and see if the numbers confirm Nintendo’s claim that Wii U sales increased fourfold thanks to Mario Kart 8.
All things considered, I think it is definitely worth mentioning that May was a good month for the industry. Thanks to the likes of Mario Kart 8 and Watch Dogs, overall software sales were up 57 percent year over year, while console sales saw an amazing 95 percent increase.
