It seemed like a foregone conclusion to many, but the lifetime sales of Nintendo Switch have finally surpassed those of PlayStation 2 here in the United States. Word of this achievement came from Circana (formerly NPD) via executive director and video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella. He states that as of November 30, 2024 Switch reached 46.6 million units sold. PS2 reached a total of 45.5 million across its lifetime in the region.
It’s an impressive number, but not quite enough to land Switch in first place, which is currently occupied by another Nintendo console: Nintendo DS. DS has sold 53 million in the US, a number that might just be out of reach when all is said and done, particularly given the imminent announcement and release of the Switch successor console. Word on that system is expected to arrive before the end of Nintendo’s current fiscal year.
Globally, PS2 remains on top with 160 million units sold, which is also likely not going to be surpassed by Switch, which is currently at 146 million. Still, considering how long PS2 was on the market compared to Switch, that 146 million is a pretty impressive number no matter how you look at things. Now the question becomes, how many units of Switch 2 will sell? We’ll just have to wait and see.
