Borderlands is a bomb. Not the bomb, but a bomb, of the explosive variety, blowing through Lionsgate’s hopes and dreams that the film might be a success at the box office. Things were already looking bleak for the film when it debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a zero percent critics score. In the days since, the score has climbed a little higher to eight percent, which is still… awful. And by all accounts, fans seem to think the same thing as critics, avoiding the film in droves.
Over the weekend, Borderlands managed to pull in $16.5 million globally, with just $8.8 million domestically. The film has a reported budget of $115 million with an addition $30 million spent on marketing. The Eli Roth film, starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, looks like it won’t be earning back much of that production cost, let alone turn a profit.
If you’re hankering for proper Borderlands, the series is on Nintendo Switch. You’re also welcome to give the film a shot, but expect to have a lot of elbow room in the theater when you go.
