Resident Evil has been on an interesting path as a series, straddling the line between new and old for years now. Remakes have become a staple of the Resident Evil release schedule (indeed, a trio are heading to Nintendo Switch 2 this month), but new mainline installments are also being released, like this year’s Resident Evil Requiem. Still, the question has remained as to if or how Capcom might ever reconcile the stories in the remakes with the original versions. And as it turns out, the Resident Evil team at Capcom has actually been thinking about exactly this for some time now.
RENews, a prominent X account that posts about the Resident Evil series, relayed the following snippet from Jun Takeuchi, a longtime series developer and current Executive Producer:
👀 Jun Takeuchi on the future of Resident Evil and the remake series eventually catching up with the numbered games. "The current “Resident Evil” series is being developed along two tracks: the numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing story of the series, while the remake series allows them to experience the past. Someday, the remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens. In fact, we have been gradually preparing for that since around “Resident Evil Village.” The appearance of names such as Umbrella and Spencer, as well as the return of Raccoon City in “Requiem,” are also in preparation for a “crossover.” One of the reasons we regard “7” as a turning point for the series is that it was also the title where we began working on this kind of setup. At first, we included these elements with the sense that they were fan service, but users were far more delighted by them than we had imagined, and they even began analyzing the thoughts that the development team had privately kept to itself. So, as a series, we decided to respond to users’ expectations and pushed this setup further in “Village” and “Requiem.” (via: BIOHAZARD 30th Special Mook)

It’s an interesting statement, but also somewhat confusing. After all, what exactly is being set up by using names like Umbrella and Spencer when they’re just a mainstay of the lore? It’s not exactly establishing connections between the remakes and the mainline entries when they’re all sharing the same universe, characters, etc. It would be stranger if a remake of Resident Evil 2 didn’t use the name Umbrella, after all. As unclear as Takeuchi’s statement might be, the spirit of it is clear enough. However, as for what a so-called crossover between the remakes and mainline series would entail is anyone’s guess. it also sounds like it’s a ways away, as the remakes currently haven’t covered everything up to Resident Evil 6; with the series celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and at the rate Capcom is going with development, it’s possible this crossover won’t materialize until Resident Evil turns 40.
