The golden age of clone consoles with which to play retro video games will be extending into the next decade. Leading that charge is the much-hyped and long in-development Polymega. The system is touted as being able to play the actual discs and cartridges from countless different systems across multiple eras. For a quick primer, watch this trailer:
Polymega is a modular console— different plug-in devices (called Element Module Sets) allow the unit to play an enormous array of games far beyond what the baseline system offers. What’s more, games can be directly saved to the device itself, with word of a digital storefront coming, as well. It all sounds like a retro enthusiast’s dreams made manifest, but fans have been cautious about the system following a very extended development cycle. Polymega has been in the pipeline for years now and was supposed to drop in 2019. Instead, it’s looking like early 2020 is going to be when the system finally gets into the hands of consumers.
The delay will bring with it some handy quality of life improvements. Screen filters, game patching, and even tweaks to Polymega’s Lightgun are all in the cards. If Polymega lives up to its expectations, it could be a real game-changer in the market, redefining the nature of clone hardware moving forward.
