Video game preservation has never been one of the industry’s strong suits. While games that have achieved a certain “classic” status remain easy to come by, a number of smaller titles and variations on classic video games have been lost to time. Fortunately, a group of Donkey Kong fans have managed to acquire a rare copy of Donkey Kong 3: The Great Counterattack and released an emulator online for fans to download!

Originally released on personal computers by Hudson Soft, the title is a variation on the arcade version of Donkey Kong 3. A number of Hudson Soft’s officially licensed Nintendo PC releases have been made available online over the years, but this is the first time Donkey Kong 3: The Great Counterattack has received a similar treatment. Like those other offerings, the developer had to make a number of concessions in order to get the game to work on personal computers. Stanley the Bugman still shoots bug spray at DK to keep him from crashing down, but the backgrounds are much different, showcasing locations around the globe.

As a big fan of the arcade original, I’m personally intrigued by Donkey Kong 3: The Great Counterattack! It’s always interesting to see these types of variations and how they stack up to their predecessors. Do you plan on downloading the title? Let us know in the comments below!
