Nintendo announced today that Metroid Prime: Federation Force has been delayed until August 19 in North America, September 2 in Europe, and August 25 in Japan.
The Metroid Prime spin-off was originally scheduled to release some time in late spring, but Nintendo has decided that some extra time was needed in order to improve the game’s balance.
Metroid Prime: Federation Force sees players assume the role of a Galactic Federation Marine in a co-operative first-person shooter, similar to Metroid Prime Hunters on the original Nintendo DS. It features a more cartoony art style than previous games in the Metroid Prime series and also features a multiplayer mode known as Metroid Prime: Blast Ball– the original reveal of which at E3 was met with a decidedly negative response by Metroid fans.
While those looking forward to the game will surely be disappointed by the news, at least we now have a firm release date for the title. The extra time may also be just what it needs to recover from the initial backlash against it (which our own Anthony discusses in more detail here).
Are you disappointed by Metroid Prime: Federation Force’s delay or will you not be picking it up until Samus makes an appearance? Let us know in the comments below.

I don’t imagine that’s enough time to re-skin it and make it look a little bit like a Metroid game? Even Pinball and Hunters at least bothered to look the part.
I’ll play a demo, I’ll give this thing every chance, but I will mock this horrible art style the entire time.
Truthfully, I don’t like the art style either, but I assume there’s a practical reason behind it. Since the game’s emphasis is on cooperating with three other players, I figured everyone looked squatter to make it easier to see all of your teammates, since they don’t take up as much screen space as they would if they were more normally proportioned.
Not that that makes the game any more visually appealing, of course, but it’s what I’ve been telling myself to get over the art style. ;)
That’s a good attitude, and one I’ll have to adopt if the gameplay is compelling. :^)
I’m still intrigued by this game. But I also tend to go in the other direction when people irrationally target a game. And there has been a LOT of irrational anger thrown this game’s way!
A LOT of irrational anger, yes. But also a LOT of genuine disappointment.
Not so much in this game itself, but that it isn’t the Metroid game they were hoping for.
I agree with not judging a game until you’ve played it, however this game’s announcement was like a gut-punch to those of us who have been (in)patiently waiting for a traditional entry in the franchise (be it 2D or 3D.)
I’ve said before that I hope it’s fun and I wish it success, however try as I might, I’m just not excited or intrigued by this game. That’s just me though. I wasn’t into Prime Hunters on DS either. With Metroid, I prefer a deep single player adventure. That being said, I did enjoy Metroid Prime Pinball. However when the pinball game came out, I wasn’t years deep into a Metroid drought like I am now.
Here’s hoping for a Metroid related NX announcement on the horizon!
