During the 1970s, religious leader Jim Jones took many of his followers to Guyana in South America to establish a Utopian community away from the outside world. However, as word of abuses started to reach authorities, investigations into the group and their new home, known as Jonestown, were launched. In November of 1978, a US government team led by congressman Leo Ryan went there to see firsthand what was happening with the group, a trip that would end with the politician and his team being caught in a deadly ambush and a mass suicide event that took the life of over 900 Jonestown residents including Jim Jones. This event is noteworthy for those with interests in how cults function and appears to have served as an influence for upcoming indie game The Church in the Darkness.
In the game, you assume the role of a former cop looking for his missing nephew in the compound of a mysterious cult in the jungles of South America. The developer, Paranoid Productions, promises a variety of different outcomes as factors can change with each playthrough. Furthermore, your own actions affect the world as you can choose to be more aggressive or stealthy as you search for your nephew, talk with residents, and research the leaders’ true motives.
The Church in the Darkness will be available August 2 for Nintendo Switch and will retail for $19.95 for the standard game or $29.95 for the special edition. Preordering the game will net you a 20 percent discount, so if you have a strong interest in exploring a possibly homicidal cult, you can save a few bucks!
