6: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
“Mario! I’m fighting by your side from now on. I’ve made my choice…and I’m not turning back!”
I’ll admit– this is an entry that probably wouldn’t even be on the radar of most folks. However, I’ve got a soft spot for youngest sisters/brothers being a youngest child myself, and Vivian is a case of not only that but also a sympathetic villain (until she turned good, that is). I’m not here to argue whether Vivian is a male or female (though in the Japanese version, Vivian is a dude) but for sake of the version I played, I’m going to refer to Vivian as a female.
Vivian was the youngest of the Shadow Sirens, which included her two older sisters Beldam and Marilyn. Beldam was the self-appointed leader of the three and would always insult and pick on Vivian for being foolish and not caring about the misdeeds. Vivian ends up meeting Mario when his name has been stolen, and he cheers her up after the item she was searching for has been broken. She decides to help Mario get his identity back but is horrified to learn that it’s Mario that her siblings were looking for.
During a battle, she doesn’t help him for a couple of turns before she realizes that Mario had shown more kindness to her in that short span of time than any of her siblings had shown her. She decides that she wants to join him and helps him fight. After the battle, the others aren’t sure if they should have her join them, thinking she may be just a double agent. Mario however, convinces them that she would be a fine addition to the group and the others agree. Vivian ends up becoming a valuable member of the group and learns to find her own spine.
For a youngest sibling like me, this is a story I always like to hear.
