Capcom issues an apology for “customer information affected through unauthorized action.”

Data breaches are, sadly, commonplace, and now Capcom is suffering from a pretty big one. Almost 12 million users big, to be precise. The company put out a statement acknowledging that its Capcom ID service had been hacked, compromising the information of 11,774,247 individual users. Data plucked includes user nicknames, dates of birth, countries of origin, emails, and gender information.

Capcom goes into the breach in depth in its statement. If there’s a silver lining to all this skullduggery, Capcom alleges that no credit card information was accessed as a result of the authorized access. If you’re unfamiliar, Capcom ID is a free unified account system for online play in certain Capcom games, among other things. Most people who have played a Capcom game in the past few years will likely have an account, and thus should double-check to see if anything seems amiss.
