Gotta go… to HR.

The sad thing about the Internet is that, well, people kind of ruin everything. Crazy people. Weird people. Or maybe just people looking to act crazy and weird to cause some trouble. This convergence of personalities found themselves crashing SEGA’s party when the company tried to launch a new Discord server for Sonic the Hedgehog. Here was the announcement that the official Sonic account made on X about the debut:
Looking for a place to chill and chat all things Sonic the Hedgehog? Maybe find people to race in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds? We are excited to welcome you to the official Sonic Discord server! 💎 Join now: https://t.co/ArP5Y208zB https://t.co/gmU3B1JCSe

“A place to chill and chat” rapidly deteriorated into a place to post creepy, inappropriate things. So much so that SEGA had no choice but to shut the whole thing down for a bit to get the situation under control. SEGA has since commented on the situation, with SEGA of Japan Director of Strategy, Studio & community Aaron Webber taking to X to break things down:
Hello! After years away, I return to Twitter (what’s X?) today to talk about the new Sonic Discord. You might read a headline that says it’s on fire and everything is chaos, but as anyone in the server the last ten hours can tell you, that’s very much not the case. (Thread:)

In fairness, it was a mess at the start, but as Webber asserts, SEGA and the moderators quickly clamped things down to keep the conversation as all ages-friendly as possible. Sadly, degenerates are a part of online fan communities, so SEGA likely should have known ahead of time that the Sonic community has plenty of them to keep an eye out for (the horrors you’ll find online involving the Blue Blur… we shiver to think about it). The server remains up, but it’s anyone’s guess how things will go moving forward. We’ll keep you posted!
